Recently I have seen a lot flying around in the blogosphere. From awards, to dramas, to exciting collabs, to trolls. And it really got me thinking about the simple act of kindness.
In a world where you can be anything, be kind
A quote that I read recently and hold so very strongly. We live in an online world. A world where so many of us choose to open up and put ourselves out there. But also a world where we can hide behind our phones, screens or even usernames. The internet is an amazing place, when we use it correctly, but when used wrongly, it can bring your world crashing down.
Recently I saw a tweet by the lovely Lydia Millen-Gordon, a youtuber who I would definitely consider an idol, an aspiration and generally, a lovely human being. She spoke about the minefield that is Youtube and exposed some of the hate messages she had gotten. From trolls, to girls starting sentences with ‘no offence’ to comments on her appearance. And I really just do not get it.
As someone who always promotes positivity, I just do not see the need someone has to bring someone down. Even if it is just a simple comment that you think is just ‘expressing your opinion’, if it isn’t nice then why do you feel the need to say it?
It really is hard putting yourself on the internet. And when so many people saying ‘hate just comes with the territory’, it makes me want to throw my laptop out of the window. WHY should it come with the terrority? WHY should posting a cute snap of a new dress you bought open you up to a barrage of opinions?
You wouldn’t walk up to someone in the street and tell them that their legs are too fat/pale/short?! So why does it make it okay to do it on the internet?
So that is why I am talking about kindness today. it is such a simple act that really could change someone’s day. If you like their video, tell them in the comments! If you bought a top that someone recommended, tag them in the photo! If you think that someone pulls off those pair of wide legs jeans that you have been wanting to buy for MONTHS but are just not sure if you’re cool enough to wear them then SEND THEM A DM.
