The Petite Girl’s Guide To Layering

It’s officially layering season which in my opinion is both the best and the worst season ever. The best because you get to layer up and get cosy and have fun mixing and matching and OMG Autumn fashion is literally the best. But it’s also the worst because, wow, you can get it wrong easily. Bulge central. Layers adds width and being a shorter girl they really can swamp you.

So that’s why I’m here to help you get it right this Autumn and create gorgeous, flattering layered outfits that suit our petite frames and flatter our smaller figures. You ready?

The Bra Trick

Ever wandered how girls can wear big chunky knits with itty bity skirts or skin tight trousers and somehow get away with not having a bulge? It’s the bra trick, my friend. Once you’ve learnt how to do it you’ll realise how super easy it is to do, how great it looks and you’ll never go back to tucking big jumpers into trousers ever again. Goodbye podge bulge.

Simply fold the jumper at the waist inwards to your body and tuck the excess fabric up into your bra – make sure you go all the way around and get all of the jumper firmly tucked in there because we don’t want any lumpy fall out. Et voila!! A cute, tucked up jumper that doesn’t add 3 sizes to your waist. And it works on all kinds of brands- wired, strapless, sports, bralettes. Give it a try and thank me later

Mix Chunky With Skintight

One rule I go by is that you’re only allowed to have one half chunky – so if you’re going for wide leg trousers, a skintight roll neck goes on top. If you’re wearing a super oversized knit, skinny jeans, a skirt or leggings go underneath. Never pair chunky with chunky because it doesn’t look flattering, will add 3 sizes to your frame and as a shorter girl, don’t get me started on how it makes you look like you shopped your boyfriends wardrobe by mistake. Balance out the chunkiness and you’ll be on the road to a flattering look

Belts Save Lives (and waistlines)

If there’s one accessory everyone needs in their collection it’s a gorgeous waist belt. I love using belts to sinch in dresses, blazers, coats, jumpers and just about everything under the sun. By drawing the eye to the smallest part of your frame you create a really flattering figure to base the outfit off. And don’t think you can’t belt outerwear – that’s one of my favourite tricks in the book!
