My Feelings Towards Trends Are Changing

I think it’s fair to say that I’ve changed a lot in the 6 years that I’ve been blogging. I’ve done a hell of a lot of growing up, moved more times than I can count and gone through more makeup than a girl should admit. But one of the biggest and most profound changes I think I’ve made is my attitude – my attitude to buying, my attitude to consumption and, most recently, my attitude to trends.

You see I think I have really changed my attitude towards trends.

And quite frankly, I don’t know if I like them anymore.

To set the scene, I was recently doing a bit of a spring clean of my wardrobe and realised just how many trend pieces that I no longer liked, no longer wanted and no longer suited my wardrobe. The pieces which stayed were the classics. The timeless items which I (usually) invested a little more money on and stood the test of time. I realised that the colour palette that best suits me is neutrals. Every colourful piece just didn’t spark that same joy in me and was usually placed in the charity bag after a few seasons. Each item that I saw as ‘SO IN’ a couple of seasons ago were the items that were first to hit the ‘to go’ bag. They were the first items that I fell out of love with and the first pieces that would end up at the back of my wardrobe.

And it really got me thinking about my consumption of trend pieces. It’s hard to completely dismiss them. On the one hand, it’s my job to investigate what’s hot this season and what’s new on the high street. But on the other hand, I’m just not finding the same joy in trend pieces as I used to.

I don’t want to completely disregard any trend pieces and say that I am never buying into another trend ever again – I mean I’m only human.

But I really have changed my approach to trend pieces and I think I am going to be making much more conscious decisions going forward. I want to build a wardrobe that is really going to stand the test of time and need minimal clear outs year on year. I want to invest more into my wardrobe and purchase a few higher price items that I can wear time and time again rather than keep buying high street pieces that only last me one season.

How are you approaching trend pieces this year?
