If you’ve been following me for a while – you’ll know that I’m quite well versed in the home shot. In fact, if you’ve been following me for a really long while, you’ll remember when my imagery was 90% at-home shots and only 10% outdoor. And although my content has evolved and changed over time, I’m really enjoying going back to my roots and exploring how to create beautiful, engaging imagery whilst being in doors.
As I’ve had so much practise, I thought I would share my tips and tricks with you, so that you can use these methods to create your own beautiful indoor imagery. So we can stay safe, stay creative and stay indoors.
Buy a Tripod
There is nothing worse than having to rely on someone else for images. I learnt that lesson the hard way after one too many arguments with Alex…. so a couple of years ago I invested in a really good tripod so that I could be a strong, independent woman who don’t need no man. I’ve linked below a few amazing tripod options that can help you out in taking gorgeous imagery inside.
Lighting is key
When taking beautiful images, good lighting is essential. We’ve been quite lucky with the weather recently and I’ve been really making the most of the sun shining in our flat for some gorgeous pics. But even if the weather isn’t glorious, having good lighting can make or break an image. I find between 10 and 1pm is the best time for lighting – usually it’s the brightest time of the day. If you live somewhere with poor lighting or not a lot of natural lighting, I’d recommend investing in a soft box. It’s not the same as the real thing, but it’s a pretty good substitute.
It’s all in the angles
When it comes to shooting, angles are key. It usually takes me a good 10/20 minutes to set up a shot because of how much I play around with angles, the tripod and positioning of the shot. Work with the space you’ve got and work out what angles work best.
Details, details, details
Detail shots are so popular for indoor content. I adore playing around with jewellery, tops, accessories and outfits to capture the perfect detail shots. Layer up your jewellery – wear pieces you wouldn’t normally style together and play around with what looks good.
Make the effort
It can be really easy to fall into lazy habits when shooting indoors. Not bothering with makeup, not wearing a bra, not cleaning the space…. it’s all so tempting and yet all so detrimental to the shot. Every morning that I plan to shoot, I wake up – do hair and makeup and get ready the same as if I was heading into London to shoot. Before every mirror selfie I use mirror cleaner and scrub it down so there are no marks, no dust and nothing to ruin my image. Just going that extra mile and making a little more effort to your shot will make so much more of a difference.
