Before lockdown, I used to wash my hair every two or so days. I have very thick hair which can go greasy quite easily and I found that I could NEVER go past the three day mark. Fast forward to now and I’m happily leaving my hair for 4 days before the next wash.
Changed woman or what.
I know when I started a ‘how often do you wash your hair’ discussion on my Instagram, it was so interesting to see how long people can leave their hair for and I had sooo many DM’s asking for advice for making your hair days go further.
So here I am. To impart my (somewhat limited) wisdom and tell you how I make my hair last longer between washes.

1 – Style It
I find that when I style my hair, it tends to go further between washes. Whenever I let my hair air dry and don’t bother to straighten or curl it, it starts to look so much more greasy so much quicker than when I style it.
2- Restyle It
Just because you styled it, doesn’t mean it is going to stay in those beautiful curls for 5 days straight. A mistake I used to make was washing my hair because it had fallen out of it’s style and was looking quite limp and lifeless. But there’s nothing wrong with whipping out the curling tongues again and giving your hair a little refresh.
3- Dry shampoo is your best friend
I know that ‘use dry shampoo’ is probably the most obvious piece of advice I can give but really. Use it. I am not ashamed to say that I go through a tin of dry shampoo a month. I spray that mf on like it’s got nothing to loose and I’ll even start using it from day 2.
A technique that I use and swear by is to cover your hair in dry shampoo and brush it through just before bed. I find the dry shampoo soaks in overnight and I wake up with much more fresh hair in the morning.
4- Hairspray, Hairspray, Hairspray
Using a good and proper hairspray can really make or break how long your hair will last. I personally use the L’oreal Elnette in the supreme hold. I find it’s the only hairspray that will keep my thick locks in place. Not only that but it doesn’t have that horrible crispy texture some hairsprays carry.
5- Shampoo twice
A piece of advice that my hairdresser gave me was to shampoo your hair twice when you wash it. The first shampoo actually gets rid of all the grossness in your hair, cleans it and washes it. The second shampoo actually does what the shampoo says (so if it’s a moisturising shampoo, the second time around is when it is actually affective). I have found that since switching to shampooing twice in the shower my hair looks so much better for longer.
6- Stop playing with it so much
I am notorious for playing with my hair. I get bored of it and run my fingers through it multiple times a day. I didn’t realise until recently how much that affects how quickly your hair gets greasy. Like seriously. Stop it now.
